On Sunday, April 30, averting a government shutdown, Congressional Republicans and Democrats reached agreement on a $1 trillion+ spending bill that will fund the majority of government operations through September of this year. Under the agreement, the National Institutes of Health will receive an increase of $2 billion, which sharply contrasts with the Administration’s plan to cut NIH’s budget by about 20 percent in 2018.

The NIH has long considered its extensive collaboration with foreign scientists to be essential to achieving its broader goals – more than 2,000 scientists from other countries conduct research in basic and clinical laboratories at the NIH’s facilities in in Bethesda, Maryland and in field units and operations around the country. The budget agreement demonstrates clearly that members of Congress value the work of the NIH, including the many foreign scientists who contribute their expertise to finding healthcare solutions to formidable diseases.
