Based on Real Cases & 2025 Policy Updates

Under U.S. immigration law, naturalization applicants must "possess and continue to maintain good moral character". USCIS emphasizes a "totality of circumstances" assessment that goes beyond simply having no criminal record.
Negative Factors: Violent crimes, DUI, controlled substance use, illegal voting, misrepresentation, unpaid child support, unpaid taxes, etc.
Positive Factors: Consistent community involvement, supporting your family, professional achievements. If you have remedied past issues (such as paying back taxes), you may still be approved.
The simple answer is: No. After obtaining your green card, legally receiving U.S. government benefits (such as Medicaid, food stamps, housing assistance) currently does not affect green card renewal (Form I-90) or naturalization (Form N-400).
The naturalization application does not currently ask about benefit usage. However, fraudulently obtaining benefits or other serious background issues will impact application approval.
The standard naturalization interview includes three main sections:
1. Civics & English Test: Answer questions about U.S. history/government, plus an English reading and writing assessment.
2. Form N-400 Review: USCIS reviews all information on your application line-by-line, including residence and travel history.
3. Background Investigation: For applicants from China, officers may ask detailed questions about past political affiliation and military training experience.
No, it will not affect your naturalization. Employment-based green cards only require you to have a genuine intent to work in the U.S. when you apply. They do not require you to stay in the same career your entire life.
As long as your original intent was genuine when you applied for your green card, changing careers is completely normal. There are many approved NIW cases including our own Attorney Cai changing careers to law school that did not impact naturalization approval.
If you decide you no longer want to maintain U.S. permanent resident status, we recommend the formal renunciation process by filing Form I-407.
After you receive USCIS's confirmation letter, your green card status is officially terminated. This makes it easier to apply for non-immigrant visas like B1/B2 to visit the U.S. later, avoiding entry disputes. Note: One person renouncing does not affect the status of their spouse or children.
In most cases, you must have continuously resided in the U.S. for 5 years after receiving your green card, while meeting both the physical presence and continuous residence requirements.
A special exception applies: If you got your green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen and have remained married and living with your spouse, you can apply after just 3 years of residency.
