A Mother and Immigration Attorney's Firsthand Story: From MIT and Yale to Top Liberal Arts College Amherst — and the Immigration Planning Chinese Families Should Not Postpone
TL;DR (English): As an immigration attorney with 17 years of experience and the mother of two daughters, I personally went through the full U.S. top-university admissions journey — my elder daughter was admitted to MIT and Yale, graduated from MIT with straight A's, and now works in New York; my younger daughter, passionate about philosophy, writing, Latin, and foreign languages, was admitted to Amherst College, one of America's top liberal arts colleges. Top liberal arts colleges value sustained academic performance (course rigor, GPA, scholarly ability) and, just as much, whether a student shows genuine passion, depth, and potential in some area (research, writing, art, music, athletics, leadership, community service). Admissions officers seek thoughtful, distinctive individuals with room to grow who can contribute uniquely to the campus community. The real value of studying in the U.S. is not just a diploma but the cultivation of independent thinking, communication, leadership, and a global outlook, plus lifelong networks and personal growth. The key reminder for Chinese parents: considering "studying abroad" alone is far from enough — many students spend enormous time and money only to find after graduation that they cannot stay long-term. If a family has long-term international plans, green card and status matters should be planned early, not improvised after graduation. From F-1, OPT, and H-1B to talent-based immigration (NIW, EB-1A) and marriage green cards, a sound plan tailored to your situation matters. Study, career, and status planning are all long-term investments; the right choices made early open far greater opportunities for families and children.
In the Greater Washington D.C. area, many Chinese families place their children's education above all else. As a trusted Chinese immigration attorney practicing in the DMV — and the mother of two daughters — I have not only spent years helping Chinese students, scholars, and professionals with visa and status matters, but have also personally walked through the entire U.S. secondary-school, college-admissions, and career-development process. In this article, drawing on my own family's experience, I want to talk with parents in Maryland and Virginia about what top liberal arts colleges really value, and why study-abroad planning must go hand in hand with immigration planning.
What were my two daughters' college paths?
My elder daughter was admitted to MIT and Yale, chose MIT, graduated with straight A's, and now works in New York. My younger daughter is different — she loves philosophy, writing, Latin, and other foreign languages. When applying to college, she seriously considered the liberal arts college path and was admitted to Amherst College. I first heard of Amherst thirty years ago, while still in China. For decades it has traded the number-one spot among all U.S. liberal arts colleges with Williams College. I have visited both campuses — each is suited both to close student interaction and tight-knit community, and to serious, undisturbed study. My daughters' very different choices show that the right path for a child is never just one.
What do top liberal arts college admissions officers really value?
Based on my observation and firsthand experience, admission to top liberal arts colleges rests on two layers: a sustained academic foundation — schools value long-term, stable academic performance, including course rigor, GPA, and scholarly ability, not a one-time burst but consistency over years; and genuine passion, depth, and potential — beyond grades, schools want to see real commitment in some area, whether research, writing, art, music, athletics, leadership, community service, or another distinctive trait. Ultimately, admissions officers look for a thoughtful, distinctive person with room to grow who can contribute uniquely to the campus community. In other words, they admit not a "perfect transcript" but a three-dimensional, authentic person with future potential — strikingly consistent with what I see again and again in immigration cases: what truly persuades a reviewer is a clear, genuine, internally consistent human story.
Where do liberal arts and Ivy League students typically go after graduation?
Like some Ivy League institutions, liberal arts college students generally follow a few paths after graduation: those from affluent families who need not worry about jobs and attend mainly for life experience and growth; those focused on popular majors who take high-paying business-related work; and those who pursue further academic study — a Ph.D., or business, medical, or law school. Understanding these typical paths helps families anticipate a child's likely direction and plan visa and status arrangements accordingly. A child aiming at academia and research, headed toward a Ph.D., may well move toward talent-based immigration such as NIW or EB-1A; a child entering industry or technical roles is more likely to begin with OPT and an H-1B. Different paths mean entirely different status-planning timelines.
Is the real value of studying in the U.S. just a diploma?
I want to emphasize one point: the value of studying in the U.S. is far more than a diploma. During college, students develop independent thinking, communication, leadership, and a global outlook, meet outstanding peers and professors from around the world, and build lifelong networks. These college years are not only a time to acquire knowledge but a crucial period for personal growth, capability building, and exploring life direction. That is why my family took every step of our children's choices so seriously — we understand that this experience shapes not just a résumé but a person's foundational capacity to face the future.
Why can't Chinese parents consider only "studying abroad" itself?
For Chinese parents, considering only studying abroad itself is far from enough — this is what I, as an immigration attorney, most want to stress. In reality, many students and families spend enormous time and money on a U.S. education only to discover after graduation that they cannot stay long-term — a lost visa lottery, an unwilling sponsor, a missed window for changing status; these problems often erupt all at once near graduation. So if a family has long-term international plans, green card and status matters should be considered early, not improvised at the last minute. Status planning is a path with timelines and windows. From F-1 student status, OPT, and H-1B (with its lottery and dual-intent considerations), to talent-based immigration (NIW, EB-1A), employment-based EB-2/EB-3 (involving PERM, priority dates, and I-140/I-485), and even marriage green cards, every step requires anticipating and planning ahead. The earlier you plan, the more options you have and the more room to maneuver.
Why not rely on online rumors, and when should you consult a professional?
Today, U.S. immigration policy, visa policy, and the international situation are constantly changing. Much online information is outdated or even misleading — a "tip" that held true a few years ago may no longer apply at all, and copying it can backfire. My advice is clear: whether applying to college, choosing a major, handling a student visa, OPT, or a work visa, or planning talent-based immigration, a marriage green card, or other green cards and visas, consult a professional promptly whenever an important question arises, and build a sound plan based on your actual situation rather than scattered online rumors. Both the many cases I have handled at New Weiming Law Group over the past seventeen years and my own family's experience confirm this again and again.
